Each loss test equipment needs test reference cables. These are 1 or 2 meter long fiber optic connection cables ( patchcord ) of the same fiber size and with the same type of cable connectors being tested. The reference cables do not need to be special cables, they should only be cables that have been tested and have little loss. Connecting wires ( patchcord ) defective give bad results, causing good fibers do not pass the tests.
Long cables with intermediate splices of external plant require testing with OTDR. OTDRs are good tools for solving problems in the case of long cables in the external plant, but they are not designed to be used in short sections of cable such as those of internal installations. OTDRs are expensive and complex instruments. Unless used frequently, its cost is not justified. Those users who are not familiar with the particularities of interpreting OTDR information can cause many problems, reproving good cables and approving bad cables, usually with costly consequences. OTDRs can be rented, but considering the amount of problems we see that inexperienced users cause, delegating tests with the OTDR to an experienced contractor can be a success.
OTDRs also need reference cables, especially a long launch cable, long enough to allow the OTDR to stabilize from the overload caused by the test drive. For the single-mode fiber a 1 kilometer launch cable is recommended. One hundred meters is suitable for most OTDR multimode fiber tests. Some new standards require a cable at the other end of the cable under test to allow testing the connector of the opposite end, for which 100 meters of cable normally reach.
